Ingredients:
For the Steak Patties:
1 lb (450g) ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp paprika
For the Gravy:
1 1/2 cups beef broth
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 tbsp butter
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp dried thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Steak Patties
1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onions, milk, egg, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika.
2. Mix the ingredients gently with your hands or a spoon until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the patties tough.
3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.
Step 2: Cook the Patties
1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and lightly grease with cooking spray or oil.
2. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. They do not need to be fully cooked at this stage. Remove and set aside.
Step 3: Prepare the Gravy
1. In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened.
2. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to make a paste. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
3. Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
4. Add Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, and season with salt and pepper. Simmer the gravy for 2-3 minutes until it thickens.
Step 4: Combine and Simmer
1. Return the patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
2. Cover and let simmer for 10-12 minutes, ensuring the patties are cooked through and the flavors meld together.
Step 5: Serve
Serve the Salisbury steak hot, smothered in gravy, alongside mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or buttered noodles.
Enjoy this hearty, homemade dish that’s perfect for any day of the week!
