Ultimate Patty Melt with Secret Sauce

Ingredients:

For the Patty Melt:

1 lb ground beef

8 slices rye bread

8 slices Swiss cheese

1 large onion, thinly sliced

4 tbsp butter (plus extra for spreading)

Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Secret Sauce:

1/2 cup mayonnaise

2 tbsp ketchup

1 tbsp relish

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp onion powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

1. Prepare the Secret Sauce:
In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Add salt and pepper to taste, mix well, and set aside for later.

2. Caramelize the Onions:
Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook until they are soft and caramelized, stirring occasionally. This process should take about 10-15 minutes. Once done, transfer the onions to a plate.

3. Cook the Beef Patties:
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and shape each into patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season both sides with salt and pepper. Using the same skillet, cook the patties over medium heat until they reach your preferred level of doneness. For medium, cook about 4 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.

4. Assemble the Sandwiches:
Butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side of 4 slices, spread a generous amount of the prepared secret sauce. Layer each with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, some caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with another piece of bread, buttered side facing up.

5. Grill the Patty Melts:
Clean the skillet and place it back on medium heat. Cook each sandwich until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has fully melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even toasting and melting.

6. Serve:
Cut each patty melt in half if desired and serve warm with extra sauce or your favorite side dish.
