Amish-Style Hamburger Steak Bake with Mushrooms and Thyme

Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 4 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and thyme. Shape the mixture into four patties.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side, then set them aside.
- In the same skillet, sauté the mushrooms until tender.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms, stirring to coat. Gradually add the milk, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens into a creamy gravy.
- Grease a baking dish and arrange the sliced potatoes and onions in an even layer.
- Place the browned hamburger patties on top of the potatoes and onions.
- Pour the mushroom gravy over the entire dish, making sure everything is well covered.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil, sprinkle cheddar cheese over the top, and bake for another 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
