Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups milk, divided
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 4-5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Shape the mixture into six patties.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat and brown the patties on both sides. They don’t need to be fully cooked at this stage. Set aside.
  4. Using the same skillet, whisk 1 cup of milk with the flour until smooth. Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of milk while stirring until a thick gravy forms. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
  5. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread half of the onion slices on top.
  6. Place the browned hamburger patties over the onion layer.
  7. Add the remaining potatoes and onions, creating another layer over the patties.
  8. Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the layers.
  9. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  10. Remove the foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top, and bake uncovered for another 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving.

Enjoy this hearty and comforting Amish-style meal with your family!
